🌍 Has Miss Universe Lost Its Glamour — and Its True Direction?

When a stage meant to empower women becomes one where they are belittled and silenced, it’s time to ask: has Miss Universe lost its purpose?

⚡ A Glittering Stage, a Cracked Reflection

The Miss Universe competition has long stood as a global beacon of grace, diversity, and empowerment. It has transcended borders, celebrated womanhood, and inspired millions. But the recent events in Bangkok, Thailand, during the 74th Miss Universe 2025 pageant, revealed cracks behind the glamour.

What began as a celebration turned into controversy when Miss Universe Mexico 2025, Fatima Bosch, publicly condemned the behavior of Nawat Itsaragrisil, the CEO of Miss Grand International and chairman of the Miss Universe Thailand Host Committee. Nawat allegedly called her “dumb” and threatened contestants who disagreed with him — a shocking act that contradicts everything Miss Universe claims to stand for.

💥 Power, Ego, and the Thai Hierarchical Shadow

Thailand’s deep-rooted hierarchical culture often mirrors top-down power — respect for authority that can easily slide into authoritarianism. In this case, it seemed to have spilled onto an international stage. What should have been a professional, empowering space turned into an environment of intimidation. According to reports, Nawat ordered the meeting room doors closed and warned contestants that anyone who walked out would be disqualified.

Even as he later bowed on stage and apologized “for any discomfort,” his earlier remarks had already sparked outrage. His statement — “I have a lot of money, I have a lot of businesses” — only reinforced the perception of arrogance rather than remorse.

👑 Women Who Spoke Up

“If something costs you your dignity, you need to walk away.” — Fatima Bosch, Miss Universe Mexico 2025

In a world that still struggles to treat women with equal respect — even in the most glamorous and celebrated arenas — her words were a mirror reflecting the truth: beauty without dignity is hollow. Many contestants reportedly applauded her courage, and public opinion has swung in her favor. Social media exploded with calls for accountability, transparency, and respect within the organization.

🕊️ The Miss Universe Organization’s Dilemma

The Miss Universe Organization (MUO) quickly released an official statement reaffirming its commitment to respect, integrity, and safety for all delegates. A high-level delegation led by CEO Mario Búcaro has been dispatched to Thailand to “strengthen collaboration and ensure professionalism.”

But the bigger question remains — how did such behavior go unchecked? And how can MUO protect contestants from being mistreated under host organizations that seem to prioritize control over compassion?

💔 From Empowerment to Exploitation?

The Miss Universe brand built its identity around women’s empowerment — celebrating intelligence, resilience, leadership, and diversity. It prides itself on breaking barriers, allowing mothers, married women, and transgender women to compete.

Yet, incidents like this threaten to undo decades of progress. When a woman wearing a crown is called “dumb” by a man in power, it doesn’t just insult her — it undermines the entire mission of the organization.

🌏 A Global Platform or a Personal Playground?

Mr. Nawat’s long-time involvement in Thailand’s pageant scene and his reputation for being “dictatorial” have often sparked debate. This incident, though, might be the turning point where the global community demands higher standards. Public commentators and Thai media outlets like Khaosod English have even suggested he step down or publicly re-evaluate his role to preserve the nation’s image and the pageant’s credibility.

💫 What Miss Universe Must Remember

At its heart, Miss Universe is not about crowns or catwalks — it’s about character, courage, and change. Women on that stage represent the dreams of millions. They deserve respect, safety, and a platform free from coercion.

  • Empowerment means giving women a voice, not silencing them.
  • Leadership means accountability, not ego.
  • Beauty means grace, not dominance.

✍️ Final Word

If Miss Universe is to remain relevant in this new era, it must rise above the glitter and return to its true essence — a platform where every woman is seen, heard, and respected.

Otherwise, the world will stop watching for beauty — and start watching for hypocrisy.
